   STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER HEALTH CONCERNS

This is a list of things which must always be considered to maintain a healthy and safe environment for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier to live in. The Staffordshire bull terrier is normally a very healthy dog.

Their threshold for pain is very high so they may not show they are in pain when in fact they may have a very bad injury, For this reason if they show any abnormal behaviour it must be investigated. So always keep a close eye on your pet.

They are often fearless and irresponsible, they have a high prey drive to chase wildlife and other animals (eg cats andsquirrels) not always being aware of what is happening around them. This can result in them getting an injury or being in an accident. Staffordshire Bull Terriers do not normally initiate fights with other dogs but they won't back down if they are challenged so be cautious around other dogs and always keep them on a lead in public places. Serious injuries can be the result of fighting plus the possibility of people getting an injury.

As Puppies Staffordshire Bull Terriers go though a long phase of chewing anything and everything they can find. They don't care what it is so whenever they are left on their own it must be in a safe area. They have been known to chew through electric cables which can have very serious consequences if plugged in. Obedience training helps to train your dog to come when called and walk on a lead safely.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are as the name says Terriers which are renowned for digging. They are good at tunnelling so always make sure your garden is escape proofed, with secure locks to prevent them from accidental escapes by other people and thefts

Heat is not easily tolerated by Staffordshire Bull Terriers never keep them outside on a hot day for more than a few minutes and avoid excessive exercise especially on humid days. If they are kept outside always make sure their housing is in a shaded area and that they have plenty of water for them to drink when needed. Dark coloured dogs are more prone to problems from over heating then the white dogs. Never leave dogs in cars when the weather is warm because the windows heat the car up like a green house. In reverse because of the very short coats of Staffordshire Bull Terriers they do not tolerate the cold very well. In fact some dogs can be very sensitive so in the very bad cold weather should not be kept outside .

Always make sure your dog has all necessary vaccinations especially parvovirus and distemper. A visit to the VET is strongly advised for any abnormal behaviour or unexplained injuries for investigation.
